[AberInsiders] A Night on the Town

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I’ve just come back from a night out around town with guys in my house. The night started with a trip to the Spar to stock up on booze. We then met up with some guys in their flat down on the Seafront, where the drinking games were limited by our lack of cards. After a few hours we went to find some pubs and clubs.

The first place we went was Why Not, just next to that clocktower in town. It was free entry and everything costs a pound until like 1am or something. Unfortunately there was only like 3 other people in there at the time, so we left and headed to the Academy instead. The Academy pub is pretty good. Looks nice, drinks aren’t that expensive, and they have multiple TVs showing Sky Sports Live. We later went back to Why Not when there were more people in there, even the Bouncers were having fun. I have to admit I’m not really much of a club or pub person, but the venues in Aber seem pretty decent, granted I’ve not been to that many at the moment.

Oh, and the taxis (welsh: tacsis) here are amazing value. Seafront to PJM for 5 was just a fiver!  Drivers are friendly, too.

[AberInsiders] Meeting the Housemates

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

On the Saturday I decided to spend the day sorting out my laptop’s internet, drinking tea, and waiting for my new housemates to arrive. Over time they eventually piled in. Our house is a sausage fest. There’s me and 5 other guys – Alex, Ollie, Tim, Jack, and Rich. Jack’s the only welsh guy, and he looks like someone from school who was also called Jack. Alex seems to have similar interests to me, but he also likes trains, and he mentioned that he’s already considering dropping out; which is a shame since he seems decent enough. Tim seems to be a musician – he brought a keyboard and bongos with him. I believe Ollie and Rich also play the drums, but didn’t bring any.

In the evening we all went to the PJM talk in the library, then went to CK’s to buy some alcohol. Ollie got some Rosé, earning himself the nickname of Chardonnay. That night I got introduced to drinking games, although I wasn’t playing, I was just sitting beside them drinking a crapload of tea. Some time after 10 they went to the Union, whilst me and Alex opted to stay in. They came home after 1am, and started playing poker. I went to sleep shortly thereafter.

Was another great night, and I’m glad my housemates are decent.

Meeting the Housemates

[AberInsiders] First Day

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Now back “home” after spending the afternoon hanging out with the older CompSci students, who I’d already been talking to on IRC. We went to CK’s – the nearest store – and the Fresher’s BBQ, then the CompSci computer rooms, before heading out into town. Seeing their private accommodation made me appreciate PJM even more. I learnt some important things tonight, like how Inn on the Pier offers free curry on Fridays after 5pm when you buy a drink – a good money saver, I feel; and that the walk up the hill is evil.

Even though I don’t drink, it was definitely a great time and was nice to finally meet the people I’ve been talking to online for a few weeks now. Downside is I haven’t really met the two housemates that moved in shortly before I went out. Hopefully I’ll get to know them tomorrow!

[AberInsiders] Travel and Unpacking

My new home

This morning, at around 8am my mum arrived in the car, having already packed the previous few days, and off we went to Wales.  Having spent the entire night playing the newly released Civ V, I spent the first hour or so in the car just taking a nap. Journey as a whole wasn’t too bad, just under 5 hours. Concerned some of my stuff might be damaged though, since we drove too fast over a dip in the road and I heard things bounce around.

Having arrived some time before 1pm, I’ve already finished unpacking. I have to say, PJM is way nicer than I was expecting, good location, good condition, and the house being in a house not a flat is pretty neat. I was amused to find a bible on the shelf, though. Think I’m the first one here. I wonder what my housemates will be like, and when they’ll arrive.

Dawn Of The Final Day

- 24 Hours Remain -

The car’s already packed, having spent half an hour playing Tetris with my belongings, and all my other possessions are sitting in boxes in my room. This time tomorrow I’ll be starting the 5 hour journey to Aberystwyth.

It’s amazing that my life somehow managed to fit into 10 boxes, and the boot of a Subaru. Although what’s more amazing is just how much god damn paper I got through in the past few years. College alone was responsible for 3 or 4 full recycling bags of notes that I can’t even read anyway due to my handwriting. I plan on trying to just type all my notes at university since that’ll allow me to do fancy things like sort or search them, and even READ them!

The only disappointing thing about going to Aber tomorrow is that I never did get to see my friends these past few months. Oh well, I’m briefly back down at the end of October, and then for Christmas, so maybe I’ll see them then.
